While the weather outside may be frightful, you have an interview planned for noon that you have to look delightful for. Whether it is snowing or just a lot colder than you would want it to be, you want to arrive at the interview dressed professionally and ready to go. Here are three tips on how to dress for an interview when the weather is less than cooperative:
Pick the Right Pair of Shoes
Dress shoes and heels are usually a good go-to option, but they can be ruined by snow and downright treacherous on ice. One option is to carry your dress shoes with you and change into them out of your boots before you interview. The employer will certainly understand. Alternately, select a good low-heeled boot that doesn’t look to weathered and matches your outfit and still looks professional.
Wear an Overcoat That Keeps You Warm and Looks Professional
Instead of a jacket or sweater, wear a professional overcoat to your job interview. Not only will it keep you warm outside, but it will also give you a more professional look than other warm options. Wear a long coat that is comfortable, easy to remove once you get to the interview, and made from a fabric that is known to keep in the warmth (wool is always a good bet). While you will likely remove this coat before the interview starts, it will be a part of your ensemble when you walk into the building, so make sure it helps you make a great first impression.
Consider Your Hair If Wearing A Hat
Wearing a beanie or a wool hat is a great way to keep your head warm on a cold day. The problem is, they can also leave you with messy hair. This is something that you need to take into account before you go in for an interview. If you are going to be parking underground or just a few feet from the door, you should consider going into the interview without a hat (an umbrella can be used to keep the snow off your head). If you do have to walk a distance, though, try and wear headwear that won’t disrupt your hair. In addition, make sure that whatever you wear matches your overall outfit and helps give you an overall professional look.
